The event took place on Thursday (April 24) at the UMSU VIP Room, Jalan Muchtar Basri No.3, Medan.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/umsu.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-04-24-at-11.27.08-AM.jpeg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"524\" data-end=\"999\">The workshop was officially opened by UMSU Rector Prof. Dr. Agussani, MAP, represented by Vice Rector III Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rudianto, M.Si. Also in attendance was Joshua Gonzalez, Head of Public Affairs and Culture at the U.S. Consulate in Medan. The speakers included Mr. Jacob Hosier, Director of Access Programs, Continuing, and Professional Education at the University of California (UC) Davis, and Dr. I Made Andi Arsana, a lecturer in Geodesy at Universitas Gadjah Mada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1001\" data-end=\"1321\">In his remarks, Joshua Gonzalez expressed appreciation for the ongoing partnership between UMSU and the U.S. Consulate.<br data-start=\"1120\" data-end=\"1123\" \/>\u201cThis isn\u2019t our first collaboration. I deeply appreciate all the joint initiatives we\u2019ve successfully undertaken. Today, we come together once again to pursue shared success in the future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1323\" data-end=\"1627\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/umsu.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-04-24-at-1.10.23-PM.jpeg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1\" \/>Earlier, UMSU Rector expressed gratitude and reaffirmed the university\u2019s commitment to supporting international engagement.<br data-start=\"1446\" data-end=\"1449\" \/>\u201cWe strongly support this collaboration as a means to elevate UMSU to the international stage. We hope to see this partnership continue to grow across various fields,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1629\" data-end=\"2017\">Vice Rector III Dr. Rudianto also conveyed his appreciation for the presence of both local and international delegates and speakers.<br data-start=\"1761\" data-end=\"1764\" \/>\u201cWe are honored to welcome distinguished speakers from the United States and Indonesia. This event brings together representatives from all UMSU faculties and marks a key step in strengthening our university-wide internationalization strategy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2019\" data-end=\"2129\">He encouraged participants to engage actively in discussions and apply the knowledge gained from the workshop.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/umsu.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-04-24-at-1.10.22-PM-1.jpeg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2131\" data-end=\"2448\">During the talk show session, UC Davis\u2019 Jacob Hosier shared insightful perspectives on the profile of American students studying abroad.<br data-start=\"2267\" data-end=\"2270\" \/>\u201cMost are women over the age of 30, prefer short-term programs, and are drawn to countries that reflect their ancestral roots or offer unique cultural experiences,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2450\" data-end=\"2695\">\u201cAccording to 2021\/2022 data, American students typically go to the UK, France, Italy, or South Korea. Why? Because they are interested in learning about the culture, language, and lifestyle\u2014like South Korea with its K-pop phenomenon,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2697\" data-end=\"3058\">Hosier believes that Indonesia, particularly UMSU, has significant potential to attract American students through programs that highlight social sciences, humanities, and local culture.<br data-start=\"2882\" data-end=\"2885\" \/>\u201cThis cultural richness is a major strength for Indonesia. But it requires strategic promotion and sustained collaboration\u2014something Australia has done very well,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3060\" data-end=\"3264\">He also invited participants, including UMSU\u2019s faculty leaders and institutional heads, to develop and propose programs that could appeal to American students and encourage them to study in North Sumatra.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3060\" data-end=\"3264\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/umsu.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-04-24-at-11.27.09-AM-1.jpeg?resize=1024%2C682&amp;ssl=1\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3266\" data-end=\"3629\">In the next session, Dr. I Made Andi Arsana from UGM emphasized that academic internationalization must be built on the foundation of friendship.<br data-start=\"3411\" data-end=\"3414\" \/>\u201cNetworking can lead to either partnerships or dependency\u2014it depends on how we build it. The key is to think of ourselves as coming from a great nation so we can engage with confidence on the global stage,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3266\" data-end=\"3629\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/umsu.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-04-24-at-11.27.10-AM.jpeg?resize=1024%2C682&amp;ssl=1\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3631\" data-end=\"3896\">He also stressed the importance of understanding and promoting Indonesia\u2019s identity before introducing the university.<br data-start=\"3749\" data-end=\"3752\" \/>\u201cIs internationalization important? How do we go about it? When collaborating with top global institutions, we must not feel inferior,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3898\" data-end=\"4345\">According to Dr. Arsana, globalization brings both opportunities and challenges, which is why international academic programs must be established\u2014to expose students to global experiences, even through hosting international speakers or facilitating student exchanges.<br data-start=\"4164\" data-end=\"4167\" \/>\u201cThe key is to understand the complexity of Indonesia, to be able to explain where it is, then where your region is, and only after that introduce your university,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"4347\" data-end=\"4551\">This workshop was part of the <em data-start=\"4377\" data-end=\"4415\">Study Abroad Engagement Grant (SAEG)<\/em> and is expected to open broader pathways for international collaboration between UMSU and institutions in the United States and beyond.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU), in collaboration with the U.S. Consulate in Medan, held a Study Abroad Engagement Grant (SAEG) Capacity Building Workshop for Faculty Members to enhance academic internationalization strategies and explore opportunities for global collaboration.
