{"id":16836,"date":"2025-05-28T11:58:09","date_gmt":"2025-05-28T04:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/umsu.ac.id\/en\/?p=16836"},"modified":"2025-06-09T12:00:59","modified_gmt":"2025-06-09T05:00:59","slug":"umsu-faculty-of-law-and-pwa-north-sumatra-host-talk-show-and-sign-mou-on-fulfilling-the-rights-of-the-elderly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/umsu.ac.id\/en\/umsu-faculty-of-law-and-pwa-north-sumatra-host-talk-show-and-sign-mou-on-fulfilling-the-rights-of-the-elderly\/","title":{"rendered":"UMSU Faculty of Law and PWA North Sumatra Host Talk Show and Sign MoU on Fulfilling the Rights of the Elderly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"178\" data-end=\"674\">The Faculty of Law at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU), in collaboration with the Regional Board of Aisyiyah (PWA) North Sumatra, held a talk show titled <em data-start=\"346\" data-end=\"412\">\u201cFulfilling the Rights of the Elderly <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/umsu.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-05-28-at-6.13.32-PM-1.jpeg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1\" \/>for a Dignified Indonesia\u201d<\/em> along with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UMSU\u2019s Faculty of Law and the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) of North Sumatra. The event took place at the UMSU Campus Auditorium on Wednesday (May 28).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"676\" data-end=\"871\">Dr. Flora Nainggolan, Head of the North Sumatra Regional Office of Kemenkumham and keynote speaker at the talk show, emphasized that the elderly are a vulnerable group entitled to special rights:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"873\" data-end=\"1057\">\n<p data-start=\"875\" data-end=\"1057\">\u201cDid you know that, under human rights principles, the elderly are entitled to very special rights\u2026 The state is obliged to accord them the highest level of respect,\u201d Flora asserted.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1059\" data-end=\"1153\">She also shared that the Ministry fully supports this initiative even at the national level.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1154\" data-end=\"1311\">\n<p data-start=\"1156\" data-end=\"1311\">\u201cI reported this directly to the Deputy Minister of Human Rights, and he responded, \u2018This is a unique and noble event\u2014give it full support!\u2019\u201d she revealed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1313\" data-end=\"1485\">The atmosphere was further enlivened by an inspiring and humorous opening from Dr. Bahril Datuk, Chair of UMSU\u2019s Board of Trustees, who addressed the elderly with warmth:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1486\" data-end=\"1649\">\n<p data-start=\"1488\" data-end=\"1649\">\u201cDon\u2019t fight forgetfulness\u2014befriend it. Keep your spirits up, because the key to staying healthy is a joyful heart,\u201d he said, drawing laughter from the audience.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/umsu.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-05-28-at-6.13.35-PM.jpeg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1\" \/><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1651\" data-end=\"1931\">In addition to the talk show and MoU signing, the event also featured the graduation ceremony of 25 elderly women from the Elderly Daycare Program of the Langkat Branch of Aisyiyah for the 2025 cohort, recognizing their dedication and participation in this empowerment initiative.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1933\" data-end=\"2187\">Dr. Nur Rahmah Amini, Chair of PWA North Sumatra, expressed her gratitude and appreciation for the collaboration between UMSU and Aisyiyah. She emphasized the need for synergy in advancing humanitarian advocacy, especially for the welfare of the elderly.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2189\" data-end=\"2354\">\n<p data-start=\"2191\" data-end=\"2354\">\u201cAisyiyah isn\u2019t just about religious study groups. It\u2019s a real movement\u2014humanitarian advocacy to empower women, including the elderly, with dignity,\u201d she declared.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2191\" data-end=\"2354\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/umsu.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-05-28-at-6.13.33-PM.jpeg?resize=1024%2C682&amp;ssl=1\" \/><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2356\" data-end=\"2572\">The talk show, moderated by Dr. Cut Novita Srikandi, M.Hum, Chair of UMSU\u2019s BIPA program, featured Dr. Flora Nainggolan who opened the discussion by highlighting the elderly\u2019s position in the context of human rights:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2574\" data-end=\"2732\">\n<p data-start=\"2576\" data-end=\"2732\">\u201cThe elderly are a highly vulnerable group with extensive rights. The state must offer them unconditional respect and prioritized services,\u201d she emphasized.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2734\" data-end=\"2876\">Dr. Flora added that elderly-friendly services have now become standard in public service offices, including immigration and legal services.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/umsu.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-05-28-at-6.13.34-PM-2.jpeg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2877\" data-end=\"3065\">\n<p data-start=\"2879\" data-end=\"3065\">\u201cI feel very close to paradise today, because this event is truly noble. Its only goal is to make our elderly mothers happy,\u201d she said with emotion, receiving applause from the audience.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3067\" data-end=\"3228\">Next, Prof. Dr. Ida Hanifah, S.H., M.H., a prominent Aisyiyah figure and UMSU academic, invited the audience to view the elderly as national assets, not burdens.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3230\" data-end=\"3364\">\n<p data-start=\"3232\" data-end=\"3364\">\u201cWe must shift the paradigm. The elderly are not a burden\u2014they are invaluable sources of wisdom, values, and experience,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3366\" data-end=\"3481\">She highlighted Aisyiyah\u2019s ongoing role in providing education and support to the elderly across various regions:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3482\" data-end=\"3656\">\n<p data-start=\"3484\" data-end=\"3656\">\u201cLaw No. 13 of 1998 guarantees the rights of the elderly, from healthcare to education. Aisyiyah acts as a bridge to implement this law at the grassroots level,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3658\" data-end=\"3844\">From a healthcare perspective, Dr. Fauziah Heni, Sp.T.H.T.K.L., underscored the importance of a holistic view of elderly wellbeing\u2014encompassing physical, emotional, and spiritual health:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3846\" data-end=\"4060\">\n<p data-start=\"3848\" data-end=\"4060\">\u201cElderly health is not just about the physical body\u2014it includes mental and spiritual wellbeing. Elderly individuals who are socially and emotionally active tend to live longer and healthier lives,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"4062\" data-end=\"4138\">She praised Aisyiyah\u2019s elderly daycare program as an exemplary initiative:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"4139\" data-end=\"4296\">\n<p data-start=\"4141\" data-end=\"4296\">\u201cPrograms like this not only support physical health but also help build self-confidence and encourage continued contributions from the elderly,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"4298\" data-end=\"4451\">Finally, Dra. Sastrawati, a social volunteer who works closely with street children and neglected elderly, offered a grounded perspective from the field:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"4453\" data-end=\"4577\">\n<p data-start=\"4455\" data-end=\"4577\">\u201cMany elderly individuals are socially marginalized. Our task isn\u2019t just to care for them, but to empower them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"4579\" data-end=\"4658\">She stressed that the elderly don\u2019t need pity, but recognition and inclusion:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4579\" data-end=\"4658\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/umsu.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-05-28-at-6.13.36-PM.jpeg?resize=1024%2C682&amp;ssl=1\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"4659\" data-end=\"4811\">\n<p data-start=\"4661\" data-end=\"4811\">\u201cElderly happiness is simple\u2014being embraced, listened to, and given space. That\u2019s more than enough to keep their spirits alive,\u201d Sastrawati concluded.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"4813\" data-end=\"5019\">The talk show, led by Dr. Cut Novita Srikandi, M.Hum, was engaging and heartwarming. Participants, including students and elderly graduates, listened attentively and felt inspired by the speakers\u2019 insights.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"5021\" data-end=\"5247\">This event served as a powerful reminder that aging is not merely about growing old\u2014but about honoring the lives that have been lived. In the face of limitations, the elderly continue to embody resilience, dignity, and spirit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"5249\" data-end=\"5830\">The event was attended by UMSU Board of Trustees Chair Dr. Bahril Datuk, M.M., BPH member Prof. Dr. Ida Hanifah, M.H., Vice Dean I of the Faculty of Law Dr. Zainuddin, S.H., M.H., Vice Dean III &amp; Chair of Aisyiyah\u2019s Legal and Human Rights Council Dr. Atika Rahmi, S.H., M.H., PWA North Sumatra Chair Dr. Nur Rahmah Amini, M.A., PWM North Sumatra Chair Drs. Mario Kasduri, M.A., Head of Kemenkumham North Sumatra Dr. Flora Nainggolan, S.H., M.Hum., Head of the North Sumatra Social Services Drs.
