Meutya Viada Hafid, B.Eng., M.IP, delivered a keynote address at the first lecture for new students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU), themed <em data-start=\"425\" data-end=\"496\">\u201cOptimizing the Potential of Gen Z and AI Toward a Golden Indonesia.\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"496\" data-end=\"499\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/umsu.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-09-29-at-1.12.07-PM-300x200.jpeg\" \/>The event, initiated by the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, was officially opened by Rector Prof. Dr. Agussani, MAP, and held on Monday (29\/9) at the UMSU Auditorium, Jalan Muchtar Basri No. 3, Medan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"711\" data-end=\"1036\">In her public lecture, Minister Meutya Hafid emphasized the crucial role of Gen Z in Indonesia\u2019s digital development.<br data-start=\"828\" data-end=\"831\" \/>\u201cToday, 229.4 million Indonesians use the internet, with Gen Z being one of the largest user groups. But don\u2019t just be consumers\u2014Gen Z must become producers of AI-based content and technology,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1038\" data-end=\"1448\">She explained that the ministry is actively building a healthy digital ecosystem through various initiatives.<br data-start=\"1147\" data-end=\"1150\" \/>\u201cWe are developing the Garuda Spark Innovation Hub as a platform for new products and startups. In North Sumatra, the focus includes agriculture, foodtech, and trade platforms. Young people in this region are highly creative, and its economy is growing faster than the national average,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1450\" data-end=\"1762\">The Minister also highlighted that AI is a defining force of the digital era.<br data-start=\"1527\" data-end=\"1530\" \/>\u201cAI is not just an intelligent machine\u2014it is a driver of economic and educational transformation. But its use must remain ethical, human-centered, and mindful of impacts such as the potential decline in traditional jobs,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1764\" data-end=\"2086\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/umsu.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-09-29-at-1.12.03-PM-1-300x200.jpeg\" \/>She further encouraged universities to take an active role in building an AI talent pipeline.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/umsu.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-09-29-at-1.12.10-PM-300x200.jpeg\" \/><br data-start=\"1857\" data-end=\"1860\" \/>\u201cUniversities, including UMSU, play a key role in shaping the AI ecosystem. Students must be equipped with soft skills, integrative thinking, innovation, integrity, and the spirit to lead Indonesia\u2019s transformation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2088\" data-end=\"2388\">Aside from discussing AI, the Minister also addressed the threats of the digital world, such as online gambling, cyber fraud, pornography, and cyberbullying.<br data-start=\"2245\" data-end=\"2248\" \/>\u201cI ask for UMSU\u2019s support, given its strong and wide network, to help combat online gambling and other forms of digital crime,\u201d said Meutya.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2390\" data-end=\"2707\">She also stressed the need for balance in digital use.<br data-start=\"2444\" data-end=\"2447\" \/>\u201cDigital technology is easy for young people to adopt, but we must remember digital wellness and digital detox. Don\u2019t become overly dependent on machines. AI-generated products must also include proper attribution to respect human-created work,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"2709\" data-end=\"3001\">Earlier, UMSU Rector Prof. Agussani expressed his appreciation for the Minister\u2019s presence.<br data-start=\"2800\" data-end=\"2803\" \/>\u201cWelcome to UMSU. Your presence is truly motivating. This is Minister Meutya Hafid\u2019s first visit to UMSU since being appointed as Indonesia\u2019s Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3003\" data-end=\"3239\">The Rector highlighted that the Minister\u2019s visit is a significant moment for the new students.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3003\" data-end=\"3239\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/umsu.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-09-29-at-1.12.10-PM-1.jpeg\" \/><br data-start=\"3097\" data-end=\"3100\" \/>\u201cUMSU students are fortunate to be addressed directly by the Minister. This is a valuable foundation for their academic journey,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3241\" data-end=\"3622\">He also mentioned the development of UMSU\u2019s integrated campus in Desa Sampali, Deliserdang, which will serve as the venue for the Muhammadiyah\u2013Aisyiyah Congress in 2027.<br data-start=\"3410\" data-end=\"3413\" \/>\u201cWe hope the Minister will visit UMSU\u2019s Campus IV in the future. Her presence will support strategic collaboration in education development, especially for empowering Gen Z toward a Golden Indonesia,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3624\" data-end=\"3874\">The first lecture was met with great enthusiasm from hundreds of new students from four faculties. They listened attentively to the Minister\u2019s presentation and expressed hopes of contributing to the advancement of digital technology, particularly AI.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/umsu.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-09-29-at-1.12.05-PM-1024x682.jpeg\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"3876\" data-end=\"4310\">The event was also attended by the Minister\u2019s Expert Staff for Social, Economic, and Cultural Affairs Raden Wijaya Kusumawardhana; Special Staff Alfrendo Kautsar Ramadhan; the Minister\u2019s Expert Assistant Ajran Afdholi (an alumnus of UMSU\u2019s Communication Science Program, class of 2019); Dean of FISIP UMSU Assoc.
