The winners were honored during the closing ceremony held on Wednesday afternoon (June 3) at the UMSU Auditorium on Muchtar Basri Street No. 3, Medan.

The closing ceremony was officiated by UMSU Rector Prof. Dr. Akrim, M.Pd., and attended by Chairman of the UMSU Board of Trustees Prof. Dr. Agussani, M.AP., Vice Rector III Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rudianto, M.Si., university leaders, faculty representatives, judges from the North Sumatra Qur’an Recitation Development Institute (LPTQ), as well as participants and official delegates from the competing universities.

In his remarks, Rector Prof. Akrim reaffirmed UMSU’s strong commitment to nurturing students who excel in Qur’anic studies. He emphasized that the university is always ready to host MTQ competitions and continues to strengthen Qur’an recitation (tilawah) and memorization (tahfiz) programs through its Qur’an Recitation Development Institute (LPTQ).

“For me, this is especially meaningful because UMSU is a home for those who love the Qur’an,” he said.

He explained that UMSU has long supported the development of a Qur’an-centered generation by strengthening its LPTQ and providing scholarships for students who excel in Qur’an recitation and memorization.

“Every year we provide scholarships for students who excel in Qur’an recitation, as well as for those who have memorized 10, 20, or all 30 chapters (juz) of the Qur’an. We will continue expanding this support,” he stated.

The Rector also stressed that MTQ is not merely a competition to determine winners but a platform for nurturing future generations who embody and practice the values of the Qur’an in their daily lives. This year’s competition attracted participants from 32 universities throughout North Sumatra.

Earlier, Dr. Abdul Rahman, M.Pd., Chair of the 2026 North Sumatra Inter-University MTQ Organizing Committee, reported that the event ran smoothly from opening to closing. He emphasized that the judging process was conducted professionally and independently by an official panel appointed by the North Sumatra LPTQ.

“The competition results were determined solely by the judges appointed by LPTQ North Sumatra. The organizing committee had no involvement in the scoring process and only compiled the final results,” he explained.

To ensure fairness and impartiality, participants were not allowed to wear their university jackets while competing, preventing judges from knowing their institutional affiliations during the evaluation process. He added that this year’s MTQ received high praise from the North Sumatra LPTQ for its professional organization.

Meanwhile, Dr. Saifuddin Azmi Lubis, Chairman of the LPTQ North Sumatra Judging Panel, commended the successful organization of the competition and expressed hope that UMSU would once again host future editions of the inter-university MTQ.

“May this MTQ not only inspire us to recite the Qur’an beautifully, but more importantly, to implement its teachings in our daily lives,” he said.

Major Winners

In the Youth Men’s Tilawah category, Muhammad Daud Sitorus (UMSU) won first place, followed by Wildan Novili (Universitas Sumatera Utara) in second place and Ali Gunawan (Institut Agama Islam Daar Al Uluum Asahan) in third.

In the Youth Women’s Tilawah category, Nur Jannah (UMSU) claimed first place, followed by Ririn Fadilah Huta Barat (Politeknik Negeri Medan) in second and AD Fania Ramadhani (UMSU) in third.

For the Youth Murattal Qur’an Recitation (Qira’at) competition, Muhammad Rosan (UIN Sumatera Utara) won the men’s division, while Nazla Hairin Nifa (UMSU) secured first place in the women’s division.

In the 10 Juz Qur’an Memorization (Hifzil Qur’an) category, Muhammad Sofyan Alfatir (UMSU) won the men’s division, while Sakinatul Aulia (UMSU) earned first place in the women’s division.

The 20 Juz Qur’an Memorization competition was won by Ahmad Tantowi Sofa Siagian (UIN Sumatera Utara) in the men’s category, while Zahratur Rahmah Nasution (UMSU) took first place in the women’s category.

UMSU also dominated the English Qur’anic Interpretation (Tafsir in English) category, with Aidil Arafat winning the men’s division and Anindia Azizah taking first place in the women’s division.

In the Scientific Writing on the Qur’an competition, Nur Hidayat Fuad (UMSU) won the men’s category, while Putri Zahratul Faizah (Universitas Sumatera Utara) secured first place in the women’s category.

Awards were presented by the UMSU Rector, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and university leaders before the event concluded with a group photo session.

The organizing committee expressed hope that the North Sumatra Inter-University MTQ will continue serving as a platform for developing a Qur’an-inspired generation while strengthening friendship and collaboration among universities across North Sumatra.

Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU) emerged as the overall champion at the 2026 North Sumatra Inter-University Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur’an (MTQ), securing the highest number of awards among 32 participating universities across North Sumatra.
