Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara memiliki lambang yang tergambar sebagai berikut:
- Image of the Sun;
- The word “Muhammadiyah” in Arabic script;
- Two Sentences of the Creed in Arabic script;
- Rice and Cotton Painting;
- Sentences of the Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara formed a circle;

Meaning of the symbol:
- The Sun: An outer space object created by Allah SWT, its rays benefit all His creatures’ lives. Persyarikatan Muhammadiyah describes its motion and benefits as the sun’s rays that always benefit life and human life.
- The word “Muhammadiyah” in Arabic is the name of Persyarikatan Muhammadiyah.
- The Shahada, in Arabic writing: means witnessing that there is no God but Allah and that the Prophet Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. This belief is the essential aqidah for every Muslim. Thus Persyarikatan Muhammadiyah calls on humanity to consciously embrace Islam and become helpers and enforcers of Islam.
- Rice and Cotton’s paintings depict 19 and 12 stalks, respectively, representing the year Persyarikatan Muhammadiyah was established in Indonesia. These stalks also symbolize the prosperity and welfare of the Indonesian people.
- Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara is a higher education institution located in North Sumatra and is a part of the Persyarikatan Muhammadiyah organization.
- The pentagon circle represents the Pancasila philosophy.
UMSU have achieved Superior Accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education as stated in the Accreditation Certificate. This is based on the Decree of the BAN-PT Executive Board Director No. 1913/SK/BAN-PT/Ak.KP/PT/XI/2022.
