PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), in collaboration with Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU), held a seminar titled “Introduction to the Capital Market and Smart Investment Strategies” on Tuesday (May 27) at the UMSU Campus Auditorium, Jalan Muchtar Basri No. 3, Medan.
The event was a joint initiative between UMSU and strategic partners including the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) North Sumatra Region, BRI Danareksa Sekuritas, BRI Life, and BRI Medan Thamrin, aimed at promoting financial literacy among students from an early age.
The seminar featured three key speakers: Enny Magdalena Saragih from the IDX North Sumatra Regional Office, Tauhid Akbar Pane from BRI Danareksa Sekuritas, and Yuki Novriyanti from BRI Life. The session was moderated by Dodi Firman, SE., MM., a lecturer at UMSU’s Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB).
In her presentation, Enny Magdalena Saragih emphasized that the notion of needing large capital to invest is outdated.
“Today, investing is no longer a luxury—anyone can start with as little as a hundred thousand rupiah. What holds people back is often the lack of a proper financial plan,” she explained.
She also underscored the importance of investment safety.

“Before investing, remember two key things: ensure the platform is legal and registered with the Financial Services Authority (OJK). The main goal of investing is to beat inflation. Don’t wait until you’re rich to start investing—invest so you can become financially secure,” she added.
Tauhid Akbar Pane explained that BRI Danareksa Sekuritas, a subsidiary of BRI, operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Finance and is an official member of the Indonesia Stock Exchange.
“Students can’t buy shares directly from companies—they must go through licensed brokerage firms,” he said.
He introduced various investment platforms offered by BRI Danareksa, such as the Tripro app and mobile platforms. For students, there’s also the user-friendly BRI Grade trading system.
“There are three main types of investments: stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. You can start investing in stocks with just one lot. But remember—only use idle money, not your daily living expenses. Never go into debt just to invest,” he warned.
Tauhid also highlighted the importance of understanding investor rights and obligations.
“Profits from stocks come from dividends or capital gains. However, dividends are not mandatory; only financially healthy companies pay them,” he added.
Yuki Novriyanti from BRI Life concluded the session by stressing the importance of long-term financial protection through insurance.
“When we talk about developed countries, we’re also talking about insurance. A sound financial plan isn’t just about growing money—it’s also about protecting it,” she stated.
She emphasized that investment and protection should go hand in hand, especially in the face of economic uncertainty and life’s risks.
Earlier, UMSU Vice Rector II, Prof. Dr. Akrim, M.Pd., opened the event by stating that this initiative is part of UMSU’s ongoing efforts to equip the younger generation with the tools to face future financial challenges.
“The future holds tougher challenges than the past. That’s why this event is crucial in shaping a forward-thinking mindset and encouraging investment from a young age,” he said.
He also noted that the partnership between UMSU and the BRI Group has been long-standing, with this seminar serving as a result of their growing synergy.
“Don’t waste this opportunity. Young people must invest—80% of today’s youth are not financially ready for retirement. Take advantage of this chance, but invest wisely. Don’t invest just because of FOMO or peer pressure,” he emphasized.
As a token of appreciation for student enthusiasm, Prof. Akrim held a quiz and awarded two MacBooks to the most engaged and passionate students during the seminar.
“This opportunity is for both lecturers and students. Let’s begin dreaming about our future, and may this event bring benefits and success for us all,” he concluded.
The interactive discussion ended with a token of appreciation presented by Vice Rector II Prof. Dr. Akrim, M.Pd., to the three keynote speakers: Enny Magdalena Saragih, Tauhid Akbar Pane, and Yuki Novriyanti.

Also in attendance were the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) Dr. H. Januri, S.E., M.M., M.Si., CMA; vice deans from FEB, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (FIKTI); UMSU lecturers and expert staff including Prof. Dr. Ir. R. Sabrina, M.Si.; and numerous students.
With this seminar, UMSU reaffirms its commitment to strengthening financial literacy among students. Through strategic collaboration with the Indonesia Stock Exchange and the BRI Group, students are encouraged not only to observe the financial world, but to actively and wisely participate in shaping their financial futures.
