The Faculty of Law of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU) officially opened the 9th Internal Moot Court Competition (IMCC) at the Campus Auditorium on Jalan Muchtar Basri No. 3, Medan, Wednesday (February 13).
The competition serves as a practical learning platform for students to simulate courtroom proceedings, sharpening their critical thinking skills and legal argumentation. The IMCC runs from Wednesday to Sunday (February 11–15).
The event was officially inaugurated by the Dean of the Faculty of Law UMSU, Dr. Faisal, S.H., M.Hum., who emphasized that the competition is a strategic forum for law students to enhance their analytical abilities and confidence in presenting legal arguments.
“IMCC is a training ground for law students to demonstrate their critical stance in legal matters,” he stated.
He further explained that participants were selected from each class and prepared independently.
“Participants come from every class. They train independently, even managing their own practice operations, as they uphold the principle of self-reliance,” he added.
The Dean expressed hope that the event would further strengthen the Faculty of Law’s role within the community.
Earlier, the President of the Moot Court Community, Fuad Sazali, highlighted that the competition is not merely a contest but a valuable learning experience for law students.
“This activity provides a learning space to practice critical thinking and courtroom argumentation,” he said.
He added that the event also fosters solidarity and camaraderie among students. “It builds unity and strengthens bonds of brotherhood among us,” Fuad noted.
The opening ceremony featured a talk show titled “Collaboration in National Law Enforcement and Drug Prevention,” with speakers including an academic representative from Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, officials from the North Sumatra Provincial National Narcotics Agency (BNN), and representatives from the North Sumatra High Prosecutor’s Office. The discussion was moderated by Taufiq Hidayat, S.H., M.Hum., and provided a collaborative platform for exchanging ideas on national law enforcement and narcotics prevention.
Also in attendance were the Vice Dean III of the Faculty of Law UMSU, Dr. Atikah Rahmi, S.H., M.H., department heads and lecturers, Dr. Hazmi Rusli from Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, Ricardo Marpaung, S.H., M.H. from the North Sumatra High Prosecutor’s Office, Herianto, S.Psi., M.Psi. from the North Sumatra Provincial BNN, and representatives from the Legal Bureau of the North Sumatra Provincial Government.
