The Faculty of Law at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU) held a section awareness event attended by 500 fifth semester students, on Monday (23/12) at the UMSU Auditorium on Jalan Muchtar Basri No.3 Medan.
This activity determines the field of law that will be the concentration of students to support their final studies. Present at this event were UMSU Vice Rector 1 Prof. Dr Muhammad Arifin Gultom, SH, MH, Dean of the Faculty of Law Dr Faisal, SH, MH, Vice Dean 1 Dr Zainuddin, SH, MH, Vice Dean 3 Dr Atika Arami, SH, MH, and heads of departments.
Vice Rector 1, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Arifin Gultom, SH, MH, in his speech said that this activity is one way to ensure that students get the right direction regarding the concentration of law that suits their interests and competencies.
‘Do not choose a field just because you follow your friends or other influences, but choose according to your abilities and academic goals,’ he said.
Prof Arifin also said that in the current era, Indonesian law is at a crossroads. Many principles from the common law legal system have begun to be adapted in the legal system. For example, the concept of business judgement rule is now adopted in the Limited Liability Company Law. This shows that the law is constantly evolving, and students must be ready to face this challenge.
The Vice-Rector 1 gave an example of an interesting legal issue for students to research.
‘For example, what if a court judgement forgets to include the words ‘For the Sake of Justice Based on God Almighty’? The judgement cannot be executed. What is the solution? Things like this should be a concern, because not all regulations cover every aspect of legal issues,’ he explained enthusiastically.
Previously, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Dr Faisal, SH, MH, also gave directions to take this event seriously, ‘This is an opportunity for students to understand more about the field of law that will be chosen. Choosing the wrong field can hamper the process of completing the study,’ he said. He hopes that all students can graduate in a maximum of four years.
Vice Dean 1, Dr Zainuddin, SH, MH, also provided special material on the importance of integrity as a prospective law graduate. He explained that, Integrity is born from the heart. Whatever we do, do it with full responsibility, not because of coercion. This is the main value that must exist as a law graduate,’ he said.
The event continued with guidance and direction from each section head, namely the Head of Constitutional Law and State Administration, Dr. Andryan, S.H., M.H, Head of Procedural Law Dr. Teguh Syuhada Lubis, S.H., M.H, Head of Business Law, Dr. Rachmad Abduh SH.
