Muhammadiyah University of North Sumatra (UMSU) held a workshop on tips and tricks for publishing scientific articles in reputable international journals and accredited national journals and assisted in book writing. They were presenting Prof. Dr. Sutikno, M.T as a speaker Wednesday (30/3) at the UMSU Auditorium – Jalan Muchtar Basri No.3 Medan.
UMSU Chancellor Prof. Dr. Agussani, MAP, explained that this activity was one of the efforts, a follow-up to several notes on the rejection of the proposed promotion to the functional position of head lector and professor of lecturers at UMSU. Among them have yet to pass the Scopus and Sinta journals, peer reviews of scientific works indicated wrong and straightforward and the completeness of URLs.
“We hope Prof. Sutikno can provide tricks and tips for us to pay attention to the three components that are still in the record. I am sure that hard work and joint commitment can produce the best results,” said Prof. Agussani.
Hosted by Dr. Emilda Sulasmi M.Pd as moderator, Prof. Sutikno provided an understanding that in the lecturer academic rank promotion system in Indonesia, there is no term for being rejected. If the results of the assessment of the academic rank of the lecturer have yet to pass or be returned, then the assessment team must immediately follow up on improvements.
“As far as ladies and gentlemen can follow up, please follow up immediately, do not wait and delay for a long time so the process can be faster,” said Prof. Sutikno, lecturer at the Physics Department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Semarang State University and Member of the Appraiser Validation Team for Proposed Promotions and Academic Positions for Lecturers to Lectors and Professors at the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education.
He emphasized that every lecturer can propose a promotion from transfer assistant to a professor, according to their competence. However, in contrast to other countries, you must pass the initial requirements to apply for a promotion.
Some of the requirements for a scientific article for promotion include that the article and publication journal must have a good reputation, not just a Scopus, the results of the article are by the field of expertise, comply with scientific rules and ethics, the elements of scientific work are complete, have novelty value, and the research results are original.
“As long as the article is good, even if there are no indexes, it does not matter,” he continued.
Meanwhile, regarding reputable international journals, Prof. Suktino understood that in most of the research in Indonesia, the science being researched is still elementary. Moreover, the research system is a single fighter or not teamwork even though the author’s name is listed in the journal as a team, in contrast to international scale research which requires knowledge and high technology with depth that is not left behind as well as a multidisciplinary and collaborative research system.
“Collaborative research will produce a complex and integrative research that can be carried out continuously from generation to advance,” he said.
Referring to the results of research from Nicolasien and Fradisen (2020) provide tips on writing scientific articles in reputable international journals:
- References are used as references, with a minimum of 40 references.
- The data in brief and review of a book are not included in the category of scientific work that can be used as a condition for academic promotion.
- Choose the English style (America / Canada).
- Pay attention to the writing structure of the punctuation marks and so on.
“If we want to leap, we can direct our students to write scientific articles. At least 40 journal articles are required. That is still the world average. If you want to be above it, at least 50 readings,” said Prof. Sutikno.
Next, Prof. Sutikno shows related examples, such as peer reviews of international journal scientific articles from UGM. The workshop, attended by UMSU academics and lecturers, continued with two question-and-answer sessions regarding their obstacles. Then it ends with a group photo session.
