Member of the House of Regional Representatives (Senator) of the Republic of Indonesia, Irman Gusman praised the internationalisation programme of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara which is considered quite successful by achieving various rankings in international institutions.
‘The entry of UMSU’s name in various international education ranking institutions is evidence of the achievements of the internationalisation program that has been running,’ he said during a visit to the UMSU Campus on Jalan Kapten Mukhtar Basri, Medan, Monday (3/2).
Based on UMSU’s records, UMSU successfully achieved a 4-star QS Stars rating, was included in the world university ranking Times Higher Education (THE) Impact rankings, AppliedHE, Top 13 Private Universities in ASEAN. UMSU is ranked 2nd best Islamic campus in the world by Uni Rank 2024. UMSU is also one of the Indonesian universities that received recognition from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).
According to Senator Irman Gusman, campus internationalisation is a demand in responding to global developments and the presence of artificial intelligence which shows the rapid development of technology and innovation. For this reason, it is important for universities to build international collaboration within ASEAN and globally, which is certainly based on recognition.
‘UMSU has enough capital for that,’ he said while reviewing the library which is equipped with representative room facilities of a number of countries including Japan Corner, France, China and India, as well as the USA Educations Centre building.
Senator Irman Gusman visited the UMSU campus on the sidelines of a working visit to Medan. In addition to meeting with university leaders, he also took the time to review various facilities, including the implementation of integrated campus development in Saentis Village, Deliserdang Regency.
Together with the Rector of UMSU, Prof. Dr. Agussani, MAP, Senator Irman Gusman directly saw the planting of foundation piles for the construction of a ‘progressive’ auditorium with a capacity of 6000 visitors and the Walidah sports hall with a capacity of 2000 people.
The auditorium and sports hall of the UMSU integrated campus will later be used as the arena for the 49th Muhammadiyah and Aisyiyah Congress in 2027. The UMSU integrated campus was built on an area of 25 hectares in order to realise the vision of UMSU World Class International 2033.
‘The progress of the construction of the UMSU integrated campus, which will later become the arena for the 49th Muhammadiyah and Aisyiyah Congress, is extraordinary. I believe the development programme carried out is successful and smooth, ‘he said.
The senator appreciated the Rector Prof. Dr Agussani, MAP for the development and progress of UMSU. What has been achieved by UMSU shows a campus that can be said to be the largest and superior outside Java.

At the end of the visit, Senator Irman Gusman planted a durian tree on the integrated campus land. In addition, he also attended the UMSU FM Radio studio to share success tips and provide motivation in a special broadcast programme.
While the Rector of UMSU, Prof. Dr. Agussani, MAP expressed his gratitude for the senator’s visit and hoped that UMSU’s education development and improvement programme would receive support. Especially regarding the construction of an integrated campus which is expected to run successfully and smoothly with the support and participation of all parties.
‘Alhamdulillah, thank you for the visit and of course we hope for support from senators and all parties so that the construction of the integrated campus that is carried out will be successful and can be completed on schedule,’ he said accompanied by Vice Rector II, Prof. Dr. Akrim, MPd, WR III, Assoc.
