The Faculty of Law at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU) hosted a visiting lecture on “Philosophy of Criminal Law” featuring guest speaker Dr. Mohd. Iqbal bin Abdul Wahab from the Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws (AIKOL), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). The public lecture was held on Friday (May 2) at the Faculty of Law Auditorium, Jalan Muchtar Basri No. 3, Medan.
The event was officially opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Faisal, S.H., M.H., who expressed his gratitude and appreciation for Dr. Mohd. Iqbal’s visit and his willingness to share his knowledge.
“We are honored and grateful for Dr. Mohd. Iqbal’s visit. Understanding the philosophy of criminal law is crucial for law students, as it provides a foundation for grasping the theories and principles underpinning criminal justice systems around the world,” he said.
In his remarks, the Dean also highlighted the importance of deepening students’ understanding of criminal law philosophy as a basis for comprehending the legal theories and frameworks applied in different countries.
In his presentation, Dr. Mohd. Iqbal explained several key concepts in criminal law philosophy, including theories of justice and crime prevention. He also discussed various legal approaches adopted by countries with differing legal traditions. His lecture offered valuable insights and was highly relevant to the academic development of law students.
“Criminal law philosophy covers fundamental concepts such as theories of justice and crime prevention, which are essential for understanding the different legal systems worldwide,” he noted.
The lecture was met with great enthusiasm. Students actively engaged in the session, asking questions and participating in discussions, making the event not only an academic lecture but also a dynamic forum for exchanging ideas and broadening perspectives.
The public lecture was also attended by lecturers and students of the UMSU Faculty of Law. The event is expected to strengthen academic collaboration between UMSU and IIUM and contribute significantly to enhancing the quality of legal education in Indonesia.
Following the lecture, Dr. Mohd. Iqbal toured several UMSU facilities, including UMSU FM Radio, the library, the public relations production room, and reviewed the progress of the integrated campus development.
“I’m truly impressed by the remarkable development of this campus complex. I hope everything proceeds as planned, and I look forward to returning once the project is completed,” he said.
