FK UMSU held a ‘Cadre of Elderly Care’ service at the Aisyiyah Tembung Branch
The lecturers and students of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (FK UMSU) carried out a service program entitled ‘Kader Peduli Lansia’ by empowering the recitation mothers of Aisyiyah ranting market IV Tembung, carried out for three months, starting from August – October 2023.
This service program aims to help overcome the problem of the elderly, which is still a problem in the last decade. Lecturers at the UMSU Faculty of Medicine took this seriously because it was related to degenerative diseases, which would require expensive costs.
On that occasion, Dr. Des Suryani, M. Biomed said that this program is a Muhammadiyah development partnership by providing an overview of how important it is to detect degenerative diseases early so that they can make anticipatory efforts.
“The elderly need to understand the psychological conditions in old age so that it is necessary to form a community as a forum for the elderly to learn about psychological conditions and diseases that accompany them in old age,” Dr. Des.
The program was carried out as training for cadres regarding blood pressure checks with digital tensimeters, weighing body weight and height, procedures for assessing nutritional status in the elderly, and checking blood sugar, uric acid, and cholesterol. Then, education about nutrition was delivered by Dr. Eka febriyanti, M. Gizi.
This training uses equipment that can help cadres detect degenerative diseases in the elderly early on. The medical equipment was handed over directly by the Chairperson of the Service Program, Dr. Des Suryani, M. Biomed, to the Head of Aisyiyah Ranting Pasar IV Tembung, Dr. Rahmaini, M. Pd, attended by all elderly members, pralansia and elderly sympathizers at the Taqwa Mosque Muhammadiyah Pasar 4 Tembung, Thursday (7/9).
The presence of the service program was welcomed by the Head of the Aisyiyah Branch, Dr. Rahmaini, M. Pd. She expressed her gratitude to the team of FK UMSU lecturers and students who were willing to provide training to Aisyiyah cadres.
Then. the service team consisting of Dr. Des Suryani, M. Biomed, Dr. Pinta Pudiyanti Siregar MSc Ph.D., and Dr. Eka Febriyanti also prepared a module book that cadres can use to educate the elderly. It is hoped that through the book, information about elderly health can be disseminated to the community.
