The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FKIK) at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU) held a judicial ceremony and oath-taking for 200 graduates of the 33rd cohort of the Medical Education Program. The event took place at the FKIK campus hall on Jalan Gedung Arca No. 53, Teladan Barat, Medan Kota District, on Tuesday (March 10).
Based on the official decree read by Vice Dean I, dr. Rahmanita Sinaga, M.Ked(OG)., Sp.OG., all participants were declared to have passed and will proceed to professional clinical training at several teaching hospitals.
The Rector of UMSU, Prof. Dr. Agussani, M.A.P., represented by Vice Rector III Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rudianto, M.Si., extended his congratulations to the newly inducted junior doctors.
“The graduation of 200 students is a remarkable achievement and reflects the strength of UMSU’s academic system. We hope this process continues to improve at regional, national, and international levels,” he stated.
He highlighted that FKIK UMSU students excel not only academically but also actively participate in prestigious programs such as IISMA, PPK Ormawa, PIMNAS, and MBKM.
“This is the strength of our FKIK. Students are involved in programs like PPK Ormawa, PIMNAS, IISMA, and MBKM, and today they have completed their academic phase. This shows that they possess not only academic competence but also strong social maturity,” he said.
He added that this combination of academic and non-academic excellence distinguishes UMSU medical graduates from those of other institutions.

“This is what sets UMSU graduates apart. We must demonstrate our strengths through skills developed from both academic processes and recognized extracurricular activities,” he explained.
Dr. Rudianto further emphasized that character development is shaped not only in classrooms but also through direct engagement with the community.

“Character is not formed solely through learning in class, but also through real experiences in society, such as community empowerment programs that address various social issues,” he noted.
He also stressed the importance of social responsibility, particularly in disaster response efforts.

“Commitment to disaster response must continue. Even when attention fades in disaster areas like Aceh, UMSU and Muhammadiyah remain present. As Muhammadiyah cadres, our graduates must maintain strong concern for affected communities—this is a defining trait,” he said.
FKIK UMSU currently offers two new specialist programs: Surgery and Pulmonology and Respiratory Medicine.

Earlier, the Dean of FKIK UMSU, dr. Siti Masliana Siregar, Sp.THT-KL., Subsp.Rino(K), explained that graduates will now enter the professional medical education stage, which differs significantly from their previous academic phase.
“The professional program lasts 1 year and 10 months. It is no longer purely academic, but an integration of practical training and the knowledge acquired during the academic phase,” she said.
She added that during this stage, students will have direct interaction with patients, requiring strong preparedness in both competence and attitude.
“Professional training involves direct patient contact, making teaching hospitals a challenging environment. This stage takes place entirely in hospitals, with intensive interaction with fellow students, general practitioners, and nurses, requiring strong ethics and professional conduct,” she explained.
According to her, in addition to medical competence, students must also develop professionalism and teamwork skills.
“Alongside competence, attitude and teamwork must be strengthened in a positive way. Since they will interact directly with patients, patient safety must always be prioritized, regardless of who the patient is,” she emphasized.
These junior doctors will undertake their professional training at several teaching hospitals, including RS Amri Tambunan, RS Putri Hijau, and RS Bhayangkara.
