The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FKIK) of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU) held a Graduation Confirmation and Doctor’s Oath Ceremony for the 64th cohort, attended by 32 graduates of the Medical Profession Program. The event took place at the FKIK UMSU Auditorium, Jalan Gedung Arca No. 53, Teladan Barat, Medan Kota District, on Wednesday (January 21).
The ceremony was led by Vice Rector I Prof. Dr. Muhammad Arifin, M.Hum, who in his address highlighted the shortage of doctors in Indonesia, particularly in rural areas.
“By calculation, Indonesia is still short of approximately 10,000 to 100,000 doctors. The ratio of doctors in urban areas compared to rural regions remains significantly imbalanced,” he said, while also congratulating all graduates and their parents.
He encouraged FKIK UMSU graduates to dedicate themselves to serving regions with limited access to healthcare services. “During your internship period, consider working in rural areas that require our attention. Do not only choose urban locations; pay attention to smaller regions as well. Dedicate this achievement to the community,” he advised.
He further added that UMSU continues to enhance the quality and competitiveness of its graduates. “FKIK UMSU is improving quality by opening new study programs and specialist programs. We are also pursuing international recognition, including cooperation with Malaysia, so that FKIK UMSU alumni can compete globally. This is our pride. UMSU has also been listed in the global rankings of THE Impact and QS Asia,” he concluded.
Earlier, Dean of FKIK UMSU, dr. Siti Masliana Siregar, Sp.THT-KL., Subsp. Rino(K), emphasized that the title of doctor is not merely an academic achievement but carries a great responsibility to society.
“Becoming a doctor is an intellectual achievement that entails significant responsibility. The journey does not end here, as there is still a one-year internship and continuous learning ahead,” she stated.
She noted that FKIK UMSU has produced more than 1,500 alumni who are now contributing across various sectors. “Our alumni number more than 1,500, many of whom work in government institutions, pursue further studies, and some have even become ENT specialists like myself,” she added.
Dr. Siti Masliana also stressed that FKIK UMSU graduates uphold three core values that are a source of collective pride. “FKIK UMSU graduates take pride in being excellent, professional, and Islamic. Many changes have taken place, and today is no longer a comfort zone. The demands of the medical profession will become increasingly challenging,” she explained.
On the same occasion, the Dean highlighted the faculty’s academic development. FKIK UMSU has conducted field evaluations for the Specialist Study Programs in Surgery, Pulmonology, and Respiratory Medicine.
“We ask for your prayers that the permits will be granted soon. We have also established the Specialist Program in Family Medicine for Primary Care Services,” she explained.
Meanwhile, a representative of the graduates who took the oath, dr. Intan Tiara Aditya, expressed her hope that FKIK UMSU doctors would continue to uphold noble values in practicing their profession.
“I hope that the doctors who took the oath today will always uphold medical ethics, professionalism, integrity, and empathy in carrying out their duties. Be doctors who are not only academically intelligent but also humble and highly empathetic,” she said.

Through the implementation of this Graduation Confirmation and Doctor’s Oath Ceremony, FKIK UMSU reaffirmed its commitment to producing doctors who excel academically, provide professional services, and uphold Islamic and humanitarian values.

The event was also attended by Vice Dean I dr. Rahmanita Sinaga, M.Ked(OG), Sp.OG, Vice Dean III Dr. dr. M.
