Inspirational story of UMSU students appearing at the State Palace
Alam Jamaaluka Surea, who is familiarly called Alam, is a student at UMSU, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, majoring in Counseling Guidance, semester 7.
A man born April 2 2001 from Kuala Simpang Aceh, Tamiang. Successfully won 1st place in the male low voice (bass) category at the 2023 Gita Bahana Nusantara (GBN) audition. His vocal talent made him the winner and successfully represented the province by appearing at the State Palace at the 78th Republic of Indonesia Anniversary event.
The 5th of 6 children, he made his parents proud, namely A.I Tentha and Nurjannah. Not only that, Alam, who is part of the UKM Choir and HMJ BK UMSU, also makes the campus proud, which is currently his place to study.
“Back when I was in my second year of high school, I tried to take part in the district GBN audition but I didn’t pass, only I entered Gita Swara Tamiang (GST), which is quite famous,” he said, getting to know the beginning of his struggle to take part in the GBN audition, Tuesday (20/8).
Not giving up hope, while carrying out his role as a student, in 2022 Alam will continue to practice his singing skills with seniors who have previously succeeded in winning the GBN audition.
Alam, who initially didn’t have the confidence to be able to perform at the State Palace because he had many better friends, in June, during the GBN audition in Banda Aceh, he managed to win 1st place and represent the province to appear at the State Palace. He was happy because he was judged directly by Purwacaraka, a famous national musician and composer.

“So there are 4 types of voices to choose from, there are men’s high voices (tenor), men’s low voices (bass), women’s low voices (Alto), and women’s high voices (Soprano). “I was chosen as the first champion bass voice, so only one person from one type of voice is selected,” explained Alam, who intended his winning prize to increase college costs.
Alam felt that his struggle so far had been rewarded by appearing at the 78th Indonesian Independence Day event witnessed by President Jokowi, Ministers, officials from the DPR, MPR, and Artists and broadcast on TV stations throughout Indonesia.
It was a joy for Alam to have the opportunity to be trained by a national trainer and to meet great friends from all over Indonesia such as students from IPB, UGM, ISI, UB, UPI, UPH, and all representatives of provinces in Indonesia who were united in a choir.
“To join GBN, you must be able to sing classical techniques and know all the Indonesian national songs that people rarely know like a pair of eyes. “The difficult thing is reading block notation and numbers,” said Alam.
On August 3-19 2023, the UMSU student underwent quarantine in Depok. Carrying out his days with a training schedule that has been arranged from morning to evening.
The struggles I went through were extraordinary, especially while studying to manage time to complete assignments. There was sadness, anger, and tiredness but in the end, I was able to graduate.
Alam gave a message to today’s young generation, especially his friends at UMSU. If you want to achieve your dreams, you must be consistent and confident, accompanied by effort and prayer. Then don’t overdo your expectations so that you are ready for all the results.
“Be confident and confident, but it must be accompanied by consistent training,” concluded Alam when interviewed by the UMSU Public Relations team.
