Governor of North Sumatra, Muhammad Bobby Afif Nasution, has expressed his full support for the 49th Muhammadiyah Congress (Muktamar) scheduled to take place in North Sumatra in 2027. This commitment was conveyed during an audience with the Muhammadiyah Central Board, the North Sumatra Regional Board, and the local organizing committee on Thursday (May 22) at the North Sumatra Governor’s Office on Jalan Diponegoro, Medan.
The meeting was attended by Prof. Dr. Muhadjir Effendy, Chief Commissioner of Bank Syariah Indonesia and member of Muhammadiyah’s Central Board; Zulfikar Ahmad Tawalla, Chairman of Muhammadiyah Youth and Deputy Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers; Prof. Dr. Hasyimsyah Nasution, Chairman of Muhammadiyah’s North Sumatra Regional Board (PWM); Dr. Bahril Datuk, Chair of UMSU’s Board of Trustees; Mutholib, Deputy Secretary of PWM Sumut; Irwansyah Putra, Secretary of the Local Organizing Committee; Prof. Dr. Akrim, Vice Rector II of UMSU; Dr. Rudianto, Vice Rector III; Najih Prasetyo, Secretary General of Muhammadiyah Youth Central Board; and M. Syarif Lubis, Chairman of Muhammadiyah Youth North Sumatra. Also present was the Head of the North Sumatra Education Department, Alexander Sinulingga.
Governor Bobby affirmed the provincial government’s readiness to fully support the Congress. He emphasized that all available provincial resources will be mobilized to welcome the millions of participants expected from across Indonesia and abroad.
“This event will have a significant economic impact for North Sumatra. I urge the organizing committee to maintain strong coordination with the provincial, district, and city governments to ensure the success of the congress,” said the Governor. He also offered the use of Sumut Stadium in Deli Serdang or Teladan Stadium in Medan as potential venues for the opening ceremony.
Earlier, Prof. Dr. Muhadjir Effendy explained that the 49th Muhammadiyah Congress will be centered at UMSU’s fourth campus in Deli Serdang, which is currently under development. He expressed hope that the provincial government would assist in the completion of key facilities, including the main congress building.
“This congress is expected to bring major economic benefits, much like the 2022 event in Solo which attracted around two million attendees. We are confident North Sumatra will provide an exceptional experience for our guests,” he stated.
Prof. Dr. Hasyimsyah Nasution, Chairman of PWM Sumut, added that the campaign to promote the Congress has already reached as far as Java and Sulawesi, and efforts to gather broader support are ongoing.
“North Sumatra’s rich culture and potential will be a major draw. This will be a historic moment, as the last time the province hosted a Muhammadiyah Congress was in 1939—before Indonesia’s independence,” he noted.
Representing the Organizing Committee Chairman Prof. Dr. Agussani (Rector of UMSU), Committee Secretary Irwansyah Putra extended an invitation to the Governor to personally visit the construction site of UMSU’s fourth campus in Deli Serdang, particularly the main building where the Congress will be held.
