The UMSU BIPA Program (Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers) held its Cultural & Culinary Exploration program with the participation of 10 international students. The activity began on Wednesday (20/8) with a batik-making session at Ardhina Batik, Jalan Bersama, Medan Tembung.
The students showed great enthusiasm throughout the cultural learning process—from selecting patterns, applying wax with a canting tool, to completing their very first batik cloth.
“I’m very happy to try making batik. This is a new experience for me, and I feel proud to get to know Indonesian culture firsthand,” said Rashitin Ahmed, a student from Cambodia.
The activity was accompanied by the Head of UMSU’s BIPA Program, Dr. Cut Novita Srikandi, M.Hum, along with lecturers and facilitators from Ardhina Batik.
Dr. Cut explained that the Cultural & Culinary Exploration program is designed to introduce Indonesia’s arts, traditions, and flavors through hands-on experiences.
“We want international students not only to learn the language but also to truly connect with Indonesian culture. Batik is a beautiful way to begin their journey in this program,” she said.
This activity marks the starting point of a series of Cultural & Culinary Exploration events that will continue to showcase Indonesia’s rich cultural and culinary diversity.
