Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU) has once again achieved a remarkable milestone. In the 2026 UniRank rankings, UMSU secured a place among the top 10 universities in Indonesia out of 611 institutions that met the organization’s rigorous selection criteria.
This achievement is particularly notable as UMSU is the only university outside Java to break into the national top tier. It is also the only Muhammadiyah-’Aisyiyah Higher Education Institution (PTMA) to be included in the Top 10.
UniRank is an internationally recognized ranking body that evaluates universities using a non-academic approach based on web metrics. Its assessments are conducted independently using valid and unbiased web intelligence data, without relying on information submitted by the universities themselves.
The UniRank selection criteria include:
- Holding official accreditation or licensing from Indonesia’s higher education authorities
- Offering undergraduate programs of at least three years or postgraduate programs
- Delivering education primarily through on-campus (face-to-face) learning
UMSU Rector, Prof. Dr. H. Agussani, M.AP, expressed gratitude and appreciation for the achievement, emphasizing that it reflects the collective effort of the entire academic community.
“Alhamdulillah, this accomplishment proves that UMSU continues to progress and compete at the national level. It is not only an institutional achievement, but also the result of the hard work of our lecturers, students, staff, and the support of the wider community,” he stated.
Prof. Agussani added that the recognition from UniRank serves as motivation to further enhance the quality of education services, strengthen research, and expand international networks.
“We do not intend to stop here. UMSU will continue to improve, foster innovation, and increase competitiveness to make meaningful contributions to the nation—especially from North Sumatra to Indonesia,” he said.
UMSU’s inclusion in the national Top 10 of UniRank 2026 further underscores that excellence in higher education is no longer concentrated on the island of Java. UMSU stands as a strong representation that regional universities can compete at the highest level and become leading references in Indonesia’s higher education landscape.
