UMSU Students take part in “Polwan Goes to Campus”

The North Sumatra Regional Police held “Polwan Goes to Campus” at the Muhammadiyah University of North Sumatra (UMSU) as a commemoration for the 75th anniversary of the women’s police unit.

This activity was opened directly by the Rector, Prof. Dr. Agussani, MAP was represented by the Vice-Rector UMSU, Prof. Dr. Akrim, M.Pd, Monday (7/8) in the UMSU VIP room, Jalan Muchtar Basri No.3 Medan.

A talk show called “Education on Preventing Sexual Violence” was held at Polwan Goes to Campus and attended by students. The event presented three speakers: Kasubdit IV Renakta (Youth Children and Women), Ditreskrim Polda North Sumatra AKBP Feriana R Gultom. S.H., M.H, Head of UPTD PPA North Sumatra Provincial Government Syahdan Lubis and Panit 1 Unit I Sub Directorate V of Cyber Ditreskrimsus North Sumatra Police AKP, Yunita Restu Widya, SIP. Guided by FKIP UMSU Lecturer Dr. Cut Novita Srikandi, S.S., M.Hum.

During his speech, Vice-Rector Prof. Akrim highlighted the significance of the “Polwan Goes to Campus” initiative for the academic community of UMSU, including students and lecturers. He also mentioned the various positive collaborative activities that UMSU and North Sumatra Regional Police have established.

Prof. Akrim expressed gratitude towards Polwan Polda North Sumatra for choosing UMSU as a platform for the Polwan Goes to Campus talk show. The talk show serves a crucial purpose as sexual harassment is frequently perpetrated by those closest to us, as highlighted in various media. Prof. Akrim hopes that this event will provide valuable information on safeguarding oneself against sexual violence, which is a matter of concern for everyone.

AKBP Arnis Syafni Yanti, S.E., M.M, Chairman of the Committee for the 75th Anniversary of the North Sumatra Regional Police in 2003, expressed that UMSU is a university that fosters a friendly and interactive relationship with the North Sumatra Police. As a result, the two entities have established several collaborations.

AKBP Arnis emphasized the significance of discussing criminal acts of sexual violence in this activity. It is crucial for students, who are the next generation, to be aware of this issue to prevent themselves from becoming perpetrators or victims. The aim is to offer insights and benefits to UMSU students.

As a resource person Kasubdit IV Renakta (Youth Children and Women) Ditreskrim Polda. North Sumatra AKBP Feriana R Gultom. S.H., M.H. presented material about sexual violence.

AKBP Feriana stated that Renakta is a government intervention to ensure protection. Sadly, the media reports only a tiny fraction of the sexual violence incidents that occur, with many more going unreported due to fear, shame, uncertainty about where to seek help, and feelings of guilt. It is a deeply concerning issue, akin to an iceberg with only a fraction visible on the surface.

Later, Syahdan Lubis, the Head of UPTD PPA in the North Sumatra Provincial Government. Explain the Provincial Government’s responsibility to protect women from sexual crimes. He states the legal framework for prosecuting sexual violence crimes, different types of sexual violence, and the services provided by the Regional Technical Implementation Unit for the Protection of Women and Children (UPTD PPA).

The talk show concluded with insights from AKP Yunita Restu Widya, SIP, a Panit 1 Unit I member from Sub Directorate V of Siber Ditreskrimsus, North Sumatra Police. Yunita emphasized the importance of being aware of crimes that occur on social media, such as online pedophilia, child grooming, sextortion, love scams, cyberbullying, and online fraud, for maintaining a smart and safe online presence.
