Vimalakirti Temple School invited the Observatory of Islamic Astronomy at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (OIF UMSU) to deliver an engaging astronomy workshop for students. The event was held on Sunday (May 25) and featured both indoor and outdoor sessions.
The indoor session, held on the second floor, began with the OIF team introducing Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU) and the Observatory as one of the leading centers for astronomy education in North Sumatra.
The team then delivered an engaging presentation on the universe, the solar system, and especially planet Earth. Students were excited to explore iconic historical landmarks such as the Great Wall of China through virtual reality simulations, as well as other educational destinations.
Students were also introduced to simple yet educational tools like the Camera Obscura and Star Map. The session not only provided new knowledge but also sparked greater interest in science among the students. As a token of appreciation, OIF UMSU presented souvenirs to the school.
The outdoor session, held on the fourth floor, was one of the most anticipated parts of the event. Students participated in a range of fun and interactive activities, including launching water rockets, observing the sun through telescopes equipped with solar filters, and trying out handmade telescopes. A reading corner was also set up, offering books on astronomy, Islamic astronomy, and general science, allowing students to explore knowledge at their own pace.
This event served as a meaningful example of interfaith collaboration and harmony in Medan. Although OIF UMSU is part of an Islamic institution, it demonstrated openness and commitment to cross-community education. Dr. Arwin Juli Rakhmadi Butar-Butar, MA, Head of OIF UMSU, emphasized their ongoing mission to provide inclusive and high-quality astronomy education for all communities, regardless of religious or cultural background.
“Science belongs to everyone. Through activities like this, we aim to inspire curiosity in young people and strengthen unity through educational outreach,” stated the OIF UMSU team.
With its spirit of collaboration and education, this initiative is expected to inspire other educational institutions to create inclusive and engaging learning experiences for the next generation.
