Prof. Dr. Haedar Nashir, Chairman of the Central Board of Muhammadiyah, paid a courtesy visit to the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, and the Raja Perempuan of Perlis, Tengku Fauziah binti Tengku Abdul Rashid. The warm and fraternal meeting was held at a hotel in Penang, Malaysia, on Tuesday (25/11).
Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin, who is now 82 years old, is an alumnus of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, England, graduating in 1965. After being installed as the Raja Muda (Crown Prince) of Perlis in 1960, he was appointed Raja of Perlis in 2001 following the passing of his father, Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail. Tuanku also served as the twelfth Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia from 2001 to 2005. Meanwhile, the Raja Perempuan of Perlis is a member of the royal families of Terengganu and Kelantan.
The Chairman of the Muhammadiyah Central Board, accompanied by Dr. Siti Noordjannah, Prof. Dr. Hilman Latif, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Muttaqin, Rector of UMSU Prof. Dr. Agussani, and Rector of UMAM Dr. Saidul Amin, expressed gratitude for Tuanku’s assistance and support, particularly for Universiti Muhammadiyah Malaysia (UMAM) and Muhammadiyah in general. Prof. Haedar expressed his hope that relations between Muhammadiyah and Malaysia, and Perlis in particular, would continue to improve in the future.
The Raja of Perlis, accompanied by the Mufti of Perlis, Prof. Dr. Mohd. Asri Zainul Abidin, warmly welcomed the courtesy visit of the Muhammadiyah Central Board. He also apologized that during a previous visit to Perlis he was unable to receive them personally, as he was undergoing medical treatment at the hospital. His Majesty expressed his hope that Muhammadiyah would further contribute to the advancement of education in Perlis.
The meeting, which concluded with a dinner and a group photo session, marked a positive step toward the internationalization of Muhammadiyah, beginning in Malaysia for the Southeast Asian region, as part of its mission to “enlighten the universe.”
