The international ranking body Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has recently released the list of Asia’s top universities for 2026. The launch of the QS Asia University Rankings 2026 took place on the sidelines of the QS Education Summit Asia Pacific at Korea University, South Korea. Among dozens of Indonesian universities included in the rankings, a number of private universities (PTS) secured top positions, demonstrating significant improvements in academic quality, reputation, and international competitiveness.
Based on the QS Asia University Rankings (AUR) 2026 compiled from the official Indonesia AUR 2026 document, ten private universities recorded the highest national rankings in the PTS category. BINUS University once again leads as the best private university in Indonesia, followed by Telkom University, which continues to maintain its position as one of the most competitive private technology universities in Asia.
The next position is held by Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia, which reached rank 439 in Asia, followed by Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU), which achieved an important milestone by ranking 445 in Asia. This accomplishment makes UMSU one of the best private universities outside Java in this year’s QS rankings.
In addition, Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN), Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII), Petra Christian University, and Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) also made it into the list of top private universities according to QS AUR 2026. These institutions fall within the Asian ranking cluster of 474 to 526.
In the category of engineering and design institutions, Institut Teknologi Nasional Bandung (ITENAS) is listed at rank 629 in Asia, while the University of Surabaya (UBAYA) completes the top ten private universities with a ranking of 680 in Asia.
