The North Sumatra PWM Environment Assembly, together with the Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara, held a national seminar and planted 1000 trees on UMSU campus land in Sampali Village, Deliserdang, to commemorate World Environment Day and welcome the 49th Congress in 2027.
The seminar, which presented a guest speaker, Chairman of the Environment Assembly of PP Muhammadiyah M. Azrul Tanjung, S.E., M.Si, was held on Saturday, (29/6) at the UMSU Campus Auditorium on Jalan Muchtar Basri No.3 Medan.

According to him, many still consider environmental issues as limited to problems, waste, air and water pollution. However, environmental issues are very complex because they also involve natural management, including mining.
“Most consider environmental issues to be limited to garbage, air pollution, water. Don’t forget that the mining business is also an important concern because it threatens and damages the environment. For this reason, Muhammadiyah must be present to solve mining management problems, not decide yes or no,” said Azrul.
According to him, there are strategies and initiatives from Muhammadiyah that can be implemented, namely the role of the government in providing incentives for renewable energy technology, regulation of carbon emissions, green economy and private sector investment in research and environmentally friendly technology.
On that occasion, he also expressed his pride in UMSU for its achievements and national and international rankings, “Thank you Mr. Rector for the opportunity to talk about the environment,” he concluded.
Previously, UMSU Rector, Prof. Dr. Agussani, MAP, said that the campus, as a Muhammadiyan business charity, is ready to provide resources and knowledge to contribute thoughts related to the environment.
In managing UMSU land in Sampali, which will be the location of the Mukhtamar, currently, agricultural expert lecturers have planted fruit trees such as longan and durian.
“We also have a fostered village in Jaring Halus that can be utilized for environmental management,” said the UMSU rector.
In addition, UMSU has collaborated with MARDI Malaysia to manage moringa plants and run a mangrove planting program with an independent student exchange.
In the framework of the moment towards the 2024 Mukhtamar, the Chairperson of the Committee, as well as the UMSU Rector, hopes that the PP Muhammadiyah Environment Assembly can help with the environment of the Mukhtamar location.
