The Faculty of Law collaborated with the Pancasila Ideology Development Agency (BPIP) and the 13th Commission of the Indonesian House of Representatives to organise a national seminar titled ‘The Pancasila Virtue Movement for the Community’ on Wednesday (25/6) at the UMSU Auditorium, Jalan Muchtar Basri No. 3, Medan.
This event is part of a joint effort to strengthen understanding and implementation of Pancasila values among students as volunteers of the Pancasila Virtue Movement. The seminar was attended by the Deputy Chairperson of Commission 13 of the Indonesian House of Representatives, H. Sugiat Santoso, S.E., M.SP, along with speakers from the Director of the BPIP Ideological Development Network, Toto Purbiyanto, S.Kom, M.Ti, and academics Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eka Nam Sihombing, S.H., and Dr. Tengku Erwinsyahbana, S.H., M.Hum.
Deputy Chairman of Commission 13 of the Indonesian House of Representatives, H. Sugiat Santoso, S.E., M.SP, in his opening remarks, emphasised the importance of strengthening ideology amid the growing threat of global cultural warfare.
“This event is part of the BPIP and Commission 13 DPR RI programme. Strengthening student volunteers is very important, especially post-reform, to reinforce the nation’s ideology, which remains weak,” he said.
He highlighted the challenges faced by Indonesia’s youth, particularly in North Sumatra.
“Currently, all civilisations worldwide are colliding. Cultural warfare could also occur in Indonesia. North Sumatra is one of the regions with the highest drug trafficking rates. Many of our young people are trapped in hedonism and free sex, which contradict the values of Pancasila,” Sugiat revealed.
Furthermore, he stressed that strengthening the values of Pancasila is not merely ceremonial but a noble mission toward the nation’s future.
“This Pancasila programme is not merely a symbol, but a noble spirit to instil ideology towards a Golden Indonesia, leveraging the demographic dividend for the future,” he explained.
“We will follow up on this event with more concrete activities. Strengthening Pancasila ideology can be done both in the classroom and outside the campus,” he added.
Furthermore, UMSU Rector Prof. Dr. Agussani, MAP, affirmed UMSU’s readiness to support the BPIP programme, including through thematic Pancasila ideology Community Service Learning (KKN) collaborations. He also highlighted UMSU’s strategic role in shaping the character of the nation’s future generations.

“UMSU provides regulations, one of which is its strategic role in building a generation of character-driven citizens through the SRCC, PUSKIIBI, the Impactful Campus programme, and 32 Student Activity Units,” he said.
Prof. Agussani also expressed his pride in the UMSU Faculty of Law, which has been accredited as excellent from the undergraduate to doctoral levels.
“The Faculty of Law is our pride; from S1 to S3, it has been accredited as excellent. Currently, UMSU has 21 programmes with excellent accreditation. Even one of the 2018 graduates from the Faculty of Law at UMSU was appointed by the President of the Republic of Indonesia as the best judge,” he added.
The Rector of UMSU hopes that the existing collaboration will continue.
“We ask for your prayers, Mr. Sugiat. Alhamdulillah, we have done all this sincerely, and the results have been good. Moving forward, we hope this relationship will continue smoothly and benefit us all,” he concluded.
Earlier, the Dean of the Faculty of Law at UMSU, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Faisal, S.H., M.Hum, also emphasised the faculty’s consistency in implementing the values of Pancasila in various forms of community service.
“This is the fourth time we have conducted this activity together with BPIP. Every activity we implement, from circumcision programmes to the distribution of basic necessities. We hope that in the future we can collaborate more broadly, even with the 2,400 students of the Faculty of Law becoming volunteers for the Pancasila Virtue Movement,” said Dr. Faisal.

The event was symbolically opened with the striking of a gong, as a symbol of shared spirit and commitment. This was followed by a seminar session moderated by Teguh Syahada Lubis, S.H., M.H., featuring three main speakers: Director of Networks and Culture at BPIP RI Toto Purbiyanto, S.Kom, M.Ti, who presented on “Becoming a Student Advocate for Pancasila”; Faculty of Law Lecturer, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Eka Nam Sihombing, S.H., who discussed “Pancasila Indicators in the Formation of Laws and Regulations,” and Dr. Tengku Erwinsyahbana, S.H., M.Hum, who presented ideas on “Concrete Actions by Students as Volunteers for Pancasila Values in Facing Global Megatrends.”
The seminar was attended by the Dean and 500 students from the Faculty of Law at UMSU, with the hope that it would foster a sense of national pride and encourage active student participation in upholding and practising the noble values of Pancasila amidst the various challenges of the modern era.
