The Faculty of Law, Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (FAHUM UMSU), held a public lecture with the Judge of the Indonesian Constitutional Court, Dr. Wahiduddin Adams, MH, with the theme ‘Improving the Understanding of Citizens’ Constitutional Rights. They were held directly at the UMSU Auditorium – Jl. Muchtar Basri No. 3, Medan City.
This public lecture is a series of activities implemented by collaborating with the Faculty of Law, the Center for Constitutional and Anti-Corruption Studies, and the Association for Constitutional Law Lecturers. Public lectures and the activity continued with a national seminar held at the Faculty of Law. The implementation results will be recorded with a theme that aligns with the understanding gained from the activities.
The presence of the Judges of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia was well received by the Chancellor of UMSU, Prof. Dr. Agussani, MAP. He appreciated the hard work of the Faculty of Law, one of the smartest faculties, to take advantage of opportunities to strengthen Human Resources (HR) both individually and institutionally.
Agussani states, “Hopefully, the cooperative relationship built will be even closer in the future.”
Agussani conveyed the progress of the University and the Faculty of Law, which since 2011 have collaborated with the Chief of the Indonesian Constitutional Court, Dr. Mahfud MD, regarding the inauguration of the UMSU Center for Constitutional Studies, Collaborating with the North Sumatera Police Department for legal strengthening. Cooperating with the Prosecutions of State, the Faculty of Law UMSU students made the university glorious by participating in quasi-judicial competitions until the UMSU Faculty of Law won the best 1 category of sin and crime policy. The anti-corruption level at the North Sumatra University.
Judge of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr. Wahiduddin Adams, MH, also welcomed the collaboration between the Indonesian Constitutional Court and UMSU. He said that UMSU’s cooperation with the Constitutional Court would continue because many things will be worked on as fields of dedication.
Wahiduddin states, “Insya Allah, this institution will develop better in the future certainly makes us all proud that the fastabiqul khairat commitment has become a reality to compete in goodness.”
In his presentation, Wahiduddin explained three things that students need to understand related to the constitution, namely the constitution itself, especially in the opening section, one of the contents of the body which guarantees the protection of the constitutional rights of citizens and the link between these two things with the constitutional court.
“If viewed more straightforwardly, every country that has a constitution has at least guaranteed the right to be a citizen, relations between state institutions as a limitation of state power.” said the Judge of the Constitutional Court in his presentation.
In the explanation section, he also explained to the students that the Indonesian Constitution contained Dutch terms, namely the Basic Law (UUD). Additionally, in other countries, the opening constitution uses a proclamation text, which differs from Indonesia. “In the Constitution, there is a contradictory pole related to divinity between countries that recognize divinity and the statement that the state adopted is secular,” he explained.
It was also explained that the constitution in its body must include constitutional guarantees of the right to human protection and constitutional rights.
In carrying out this activity, the Dean of the UMSU Faculty of Law, Dr. Faisal, MH, hopes to enlighten students, especially in the Constitutional Procedural Law course. So that it can equip students to become advocates following more than 50 percent of alums who take part in the field of advocates and are spread throughout Indonesia and abroad.
The public lecture ended with a photo session. It was also attended by the speaker Dr. Fajar Laksono Suroso, MH as the Indonesian Constitutional Court, Vice Rector of UMSU Prof. Dr. Muhammad Arifin Gultom, M. Hum, the Dean of Faculty of Law Dr. Fasial, M.Hum, the Commander of Kokam Deputy also as the First Dean Deputy of Faculty of Law Dr. Zainuddin, MH, the Second Dean Deputy Rahmi, MH and Faculty of Law students.(Pny)
