The Faculty of Islamic Studies (FAI) at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU) sent off 140 students to participate in the 2026 Regular Community Service Program (Kuliah Kerja Nyata/KKN), Thursday (13/8), at the FAI Auditorium on Jalan Muchtar Basri No. 3, Medan.

The students will carry out their community service activities in four areas of North Sumatra: Binjai, Langkat, Tanjung Morawa, and Karo.

The participants were officially sent off by UMSU Rector Prof. Dr. Akrim, M.Pd., represented by Vice Rector for Human Resources and Finance, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Qorib, M.A. In his remarks, he urged students to uphold the good name and dignity of their alma mater.

“Maintain the good name of your alma mater. Your alma mater is like a mother who has helped shape you—first, your biological mother, and second, your academic and ideological mother. Sharpen your thinking by reading, rather than simply scrolling through social media, which may not always provide meaningful benefits,” he said.

The Vice Rector highlighted three missions that students must bring to their KKN locations: a religious mission, an educational mission, and an empowerment mission through Sharia-based MSMEs and waste banks.

Earlier, Dean of FAI UMSU Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zailani, M.A., explained that community service represents a concrete application of academic knowledge and Muhammadiyah’s mission of da’wah. He emphasized that KKN serves as a platform for students to demonstrate their contributions to society.

“KKN is not an opportunity simply to have fun. It is a way to socialize and put into practice how you, as individuals, can make meaningful contributions to the wider community and society. From the Muhammadiyah perspective, KKN is an implementation of values aimed at upholding and elevating Islam so that a truly Islamic society can be realized,” said the Dean of FAI.

Dr. Zailani further encouraged students to maintain their personal values and make the most of every opportunity to contribute.

“Whatever our position, we all have the opportunity to do our best, both personally and collectively, as students,” he said.

The event concluded with the symbolic presentation of participant identification cards and a group photo, followed by a Focus Group Discussion (FGD).

The event was also attended by Vice Dean I of FAI UMSU Assoc. Prof. Dr. Rizka Harfiani, M.Psi.; Vice Dean III of FAI UMSU Dr. Muhammad Ruslan, M.Pd.; Head of OIC Assoc. Prof. Dr. Arwin Juli Rakhmadi, M.A.; heads of study programs within FAI UMSU; and the Field Supervising Lecturers (DPL).
