The Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection of the Republic of Indonesia (PPPA) I Gusti Ayu Bintang Darmawati, SE, M.Si, visited and held a public lecture on the campus of the Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU) on Thursday (8/9).
The presence of the Minister of PPPA on the UMSU campus was greeted by UMSU Rector Prof. Dr. Agussani, M.AP, with Vice Rector I, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Arifin, Vice Rector II, Prof. Dr. Akrim, and Vice Rector III Associate. Prof. Dr. Rudianto, and faculty leaders within UMSU.
The Minister of PPPA I Gusti Ayu Bintang Darmawati, SE, M.Si, in his general lectures, invited academics and students to participate in a synergistic role in collaborating to build joint strength to combat sexual violence against women and children.
In his presentation, the PPPA minister explained that based on 174 testimonies from 79 campuses in 29 cities, as many as 89 percent of women and 4 percent of men were victims of sexual violence. She said, “So on this occasion, we ask for support from all those present today to break the chain of sexual violence, each of us, both from academics, students, practitioners, and community institutions,”
And she said, “Academics can do research, grow to understand and socialize. Practitioners practice and continue to evaluate the students and the community, oversee and participate in prevention efforts, and fulfill the rights of victims of sexual violence. Starting from the right to treatment, the right to protection, and the right to recovery as mandated by Law Number 12 of 2022,”
UMSU Rector, Prof. Dr. Agussani, M.AP, in his welcome remarks, said UMSU really encourages the quality of women and children. This commitment was manifested by establishing the Center for Women’s Studies in 2006. Then in 2018, it became a center for gender and child studies (PSGA).
“PSGA was established to apply research findings that are gender responsive and child protection,” said the Rector.
On this occasion, the Head of the North Sumatran Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Division, Nurlela, SH., M.AP, General Chairperson of the National Commission for Child Protection Arist Merdeka Sirait, Deputy Chairperson of the North Sumatra Aisyiyah Regional Leadership, also attended.
