International students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara for the 2024-2025 Academic Year increased by 23 people from Yemen, Sudan, Thailand and Cambodia.
‘All international students for the 2024-2025 Academic Year have arrived at UMSU and are ready to attend lectures,’ said UMSU Vice Rector III, Dr Rudianto, MSi in Medan, Tuesday (19/11).
The presence of new students from four countries has increased the number of UMSU international students to 68 people. Including Diana Laewang from Thailand who re-registered to continue her studies at the postgraduate programme. Diana Laewang’s name had gone viral with her rhymes when she was given the opportunity to give a speech representing her friends during the moment of undergraduate graduation.
According to Rudianto, these international students chose from a variety of faculties and study programmes. Some of them chose to study at the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, FISIP, FAI, FEB and FKIP.
Rudianto explained that the presence of new students from abroad is part of UMSU’s internationalisation programme. The presence of these international students is proof that UMSU can be accepted in the international community.
‘The presence of these international students shows that the name UMSU is well known in the students‘ home countries,’ he said.
To help international students overcome language barriers, the university has also provided an Indonesian Language Institute for Foreign Speakers which provides assistance and training. ‘The existence of BIPA UMSU is quite helpful for international students related to language and cultural barriers,’ he said.
Furthermore, UMSU’s internationalisation programme is also carried out through cooperation with governments and educational institutions in the Asian region as well as with a number of countries in Europe and the United States.
One of the realisations of this collaboration is the establishment of a number of reading corners in the library. UMSU is also the choice for the location of the United States education headquarters.
