Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU) has claimed a noteworthy spot among Southeast Asia’s top 21 private universities, per Applied Higher Education ASEAN’s Private University Ranking (AppliedHE).
Marking a significant milestone, UMSU became the foremost private institution recognized for excellence in community service, according to the announcement posted on the AppliedHE platform. AppliedHE, a distinguished ranking agency headquartered in Singapore, evaluates private universities based on learning standards, research endeavors, international reputation, global outreach, alumni acknowledgment, and community engagement.
Expressing pride and gratitude, Prof. Dr. Agussani, MAP, the Rector of UMSU, lauded the university’s achievement, positioning it alongside renowned private institutions in the ASEAN region. “Alhamdulillah, UMSU secures the 21st spot among the best private universities in ASEAN, as recognized by AppliedHE,” stated the Rector during a press briefing in Medan on Saturday (2/12), accompanied by Vice-Rector, Prof. Dr. H. Muhammad Arifin, M.Hum, Prof. Akrim, M.Pd, Dr. Rudianto, MSi, and OIC UMSU Secretary Mhd. Shareza Hafiz, M.Acc.
The Rector attributed UMSU’s inclusion in the AppliedHE ranking to the collective efforts of the academic community, focused on enhancing performance and elevating the standard of education and service quality. This ranking is a testament to UMSU’s dedication to fostering internationalization programs.
“The recognition bestowed by the AppliedHE ranking agency is a testament to UMSU’s global standing,” he affirmed.
Highlighting ongoing initiatives, the Rector emphasized UMSU’s continuous development of internationalization programs, fostering collaborations with various institutions and campuses within the ASEAN region. These collaborations encompass diverse facets of higher education, including teaching, research, and community outreach. They involve joint research endeavors, student exchange programs, and international community service activities.
In pursuit of further internationalization, UMSU has established programs explicitly catering to international students. Over the period from 2018 to 2023, the university hosted 63 international students. Additionally, UMSU offers Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) courses aimed at aiding foreign students in adapting to and comprehending course material.
Looking ahead, the Rector affirmed plans to enhance infrastructure, including a dedicated guest house for foreign students. The objective is to attract more international students to UMSU and provide them with quality facilities and resources.
“We aspire to welcome more international students to UMSU through enhanced facilities and support services,” he concluded.
