To improve the competence of graduates ready to compete in the global arena, the Career Development and Alumni Center of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (CDAC UMSU) held a public career preparation lecture entitled ‘Hacking Your English Skills for Future Career’. The event occurred on Wednesday (6/3) at the UMSU Campus Auditorium, Muchtar Basri Street No.3, Medan, and was attended by hundreds of students from various faculties.
The event was opened directly by UMSU Rector Prof. Dr. Agussani, MAP, represented by WR I Prof. Dr. Arifin Gultom, M.Hum, and presented resource person Ilham Saheri, S.Pd, C.APA., C.Ht., DTM as a motivator & national trainer as well as alums of FKIP UMSU.
WR I Prof. Arifin emphasized the importance of having English language skills, a language used by billions of people worldwide.
“UMSU has focused on achieving international standards, so mastering English is an absolute requirement for students. Do not be afraid to make mistakes in learning English, and start honing your language and public speaking skills,” he said.
Based on the report from the Chairman of the Committee, Dr. Bambang Panca Syahputra, this activity aims to prepare graduates by improving the hard and soft skills needed in the world of work. One of them is English, a language that is the main aspect of opening up opportunities in the world of work or networking.
Then, the Head of CDAC UMSU, Sukma Lesmana S.E., M.Si., Ph.D., added that UMSU is focusing on internationalization, so English proficiency is key. “We have also issued a Student Career Development Certificate as an effort to support students in developing careers,” he added.
In the inspirational session, Ilham Saheri, a UMSU alumni who has successfully become a national motivator and English trainer, shared his experiences and successes in mastering English. He delivered material on the 5 Keys to Learning English, including listening, literacy, vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar.
“I was in your shoes about 10-15 years ago, trying hard to improve myself outside of class material. Today, I am sharing the results of that hard work. Remember, English is the key to a successful career, traveling the world, or continuing your education abroad,” he said.
The public lecture, attended by hundreds of students across faculties, was exciting and interactive.
