The Communication Science Study Program, Faculty of Social Sciences Politics of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (FISIP UMSU) held a public lecture with the Commissioner for Indonesian Broadcasting Institutions at the Central KPI, Amin Shabana, S.Sos., M.Sc. It was held on Wednesday (26/7) in the FISIP Hall of UMSU Jalan Muchtar Basri No.3 Medan.
The public lecture with the theme ‘Building a Post-Analog Switch Off Digital Broadcasting Ecosystem’ was opened directly by Vice Rector III UMSU Dr. Rudianto, MSi and Dean of FISIP UMSU Dr. Arifin Saleh, S. Sos, MSP.
In his remarks, Dr. Rudianto appealed to the participants who were present to listen carefully to the presentation from the Central KPI.
“Activities like this are what we need. If every day is filled with new information that is up to date, then knowledge will increase,” said Dr. Rudianto.
Vice Rector III also said that public lectures like this are significant for Communication Science students whose work is related to digital science and broadcasting. Moreover, commercial broadcasting institutions have a role in increasing resources.
Furthermore, in the presentation of the material, Amin Shabana as the representative of the Central KPI, as well as a lecturer at FISIP Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta, provided information that after July 31, 2023, people in Medan City could no longer use analog broadcasts because they had transformed to digital broadcasts.
He also appealed to the participants who attended. During massive digital media, the public must continue to watch television and listen to the radio because these two media can be used as a reference to avoid hoaxes.
“Currently, what is meant by broadcasting, the context is only TV and radio. KPI does not yet have the authority to regulate digital content,” said Amin.
The Central KPI Commissioner explained that in the analog-to-digital transition era, there are several challenges in digital content monitoring, such as Human Resources, Infrastructure, regulations, sensor settings, to ratings.
Even though this transition has digital business opportunities such as 181 thousand additional new business activities and 232 thousand additional new jobs, state revenues in the form of taxes and PNBP have increased, so the contribution to the National GDP has also increased.
A discussion between KPI and students followed the public lecture. This activity was also attended by the Head of the Communication Studies Program, Akhyar Anshori, S.Sos., M.I.Kom, along with the study program secretaries, Head of the Master of Communication Science study program Hj: Rahmanita Ginting M.Sc, Ph.D., the Central KPI Team, and UMSU Communication Science students.
